Updated study quantifies the economic impact of the poultry industry in the United States
BROOKLYN, NY. – Jan. 14, 2015 – Today John Dunham & Associates released an updated economic impact study that highlights the poultry industry’s benefits to the U.S. economy. As indicated by the study’s findings, the poultry industry continues to be a significant contributor to the national economy having collectively increased the number of jobs from 1,377,020 to 1,814,200, amount of wages and benefits paid to employers from $63 billion to $100.2 billion, total economic activity from $265.5 billion to $469.6 billion, and government revenue from $23.4 billion to $32.9 billion over the period from 2012 to 2014, although about a fifth of this increase is due to a change in the study methodology. The economic impact study was conducted on behalf of the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and uses data from 2014. The study breaks down poultry into three subcategories: chicken, turkey and eggs. Key economic data from each are as follows:
· The chicken industry provides 1,339,900 jobs, $74 billion in wages, $348.7 billion in economic activity, and $24.4 billion in government revenue.
· The turkey industry provides 308,400 jobs, $16.9 billion in wages, $80.1 billion in economic activity, and $5.6 billion in government revenue.
· The egg industry provides 128,000 jobs, $7.2 billion in wages, $30.7 billion in economic activity, and $2.2 billion in government revenue.
“As this detailed analysis shows, the productivity increases in both the products and processing of poultry following the recession have helped the economy grow, and at the same time, have benefitted both poultry workers and consumers throughout the county,” said John Dunham, Managing Partner of John Dunham & Associates
The poultry data is hosted on interactive websites that can be viewed collectively or by individual product, and then sorted nationally, by state, congressional district, state house district or state senate district. For more information about the U.S. poultry industry’s economic impact, visit:
